Staff will lock you into Viera Wetlands if you are not out by 7:00 - lesson learned! I was hopeful with how overcast it was that we would enjoy a nice sunset. It was a beautiful walk despite the bugs - the sunset was subtle and muted and we got to watch all the wading birds flying in to roost down for the night. This great blue heron perched on an odd palm caught my attention along with the limited lighting reflected on the water.
I also had a moment with this red-winged blackbird, watching it make the most beautiful sounds. I couldn't get the lighting right but he's still worth a feature <3
In other news, my handsome man got my Bird Buddy back up and in action after a (hopefully squirrel proof) redesign and we are already having turf wars. Pretty sure my most frequent visitor is a very cute subadult blue jay - if he continues to make appearances he will need a name. I was resting on my patio and heard crazy bird commotion in the front yard and then got to watch a territorial display and divebombing action on video a few minutes later - how fun! Maybe one day I will look into how to share videos. Upload to YouTube probably?
There was also a morning visit from what I assume is a Northern cardinal mated pair. According to a quick google, these beauties often mate for life and engage in bonding behaviors like mate feeding and duet singing. Mate feeding has a variety of behaviors - (eating together at the Bird Buddy :) - like gentle beak to beak feeding from the male to build trust ♥️
They are territorial and are not migratory so I am hopeful I will get to see this pair again!
